Articles & Performance – Dr. Shpitz

Years:               2007 to the present

Platform:          Internet

In 2007, I was invited to deliver a lecture at the Photography and Collecting conference at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. The conference was held following the exhibition “Moods and Modes in Israeli Photography – works from the collection” – a gift from Leon and Michaela Constantiner, curated by the late Nili Goren. I used the lecture as a platform from which I could raise awareness of issues related to sociological and economic aspects at the foundation of the local art scene. At the time, a lecture and article written by the art critic Dana Gilerman titled, “Passion, Love and Money,” had generated a certain buzz in the art world. I later learned from the management of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art that following my lecture I was designated persona non grata there. In 2014, in advance of a series of exhibitions by the art collector Igal Ahouvi at the Tel Aviv University Campus Art Galleries, I created the persona of Dr. Shpitz. Through this persona, who I present as a reporter for The Pyramid – a YouTube channel that I created – I review various aspects that lie at the foundation of the local art scene.

Dr. Shpitz reports from the field: against the backdrop of the controversy surrounding the closure of the interdepartmental unit at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, and the firing of dozens of lecturers, first year students in the photography department, in cooperation with the student union, initiated and produced an art installation. Dr. Shpitz spoke to the students and the lecturers during the preparations for the installation. Videography: Eytan Shouker, Editing: Yossi Darmon
